update radiation physics: impact on influx solar energy

Dear Ming Chen Thanks for the clear answer. Could you help me on a consequence of the radiation update times. In the morning - before noon - the solar radiation will increase gradually, whereas in the afternoon the solar radiation will decrease between radiation updates. As the radiation is fixed fo...

Re: Inconsistent dimension sizes of U&V in 850hp pressure level

U and V are not defined at the center of a cell, but at east-west and north-south faces. Dimension of U is 1 larger than the number of cells in x-direction. Dimension of V is 1 larger than the number of cells in y-direction. Please read the clarification at: https://www.openwfm.org/wiki/How_to_inter...

timestamp radiation physics

Radiation physics is not calculated for each time step but at intervals radt. I have set radt to 15 minutes and WRF output interval (history interval) to 5 minutes. Starting the WRF run at 9:00, the radiation physics will be updated at 9:00, 9:15, 9:30 etc. WRF output is written to file at 9:00, 9:0...

Re: FNL and scatterometer data

Dear kwerner Thanks for the URL. However it seems to be focussed on the output of the FNL analysis. I couldn't find a description of the input used for the analysis. However, I found the following web page which shows the number of samples used for by NCEP: https://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/r...

FNL and scatterometer data

For hindcast work I am using FNL data. FNL data should be better than GFS data, as it is based on more measurements.
Can someone inform me whether or not scatterometer surface winds are assimilated in FNL data.
Kind regards, Gerard

Dear Ming Chen
Please find attached the namelist.input file.
I am using version WRFV4.0.1.DM.

negative SWDDIF

I modified the WRF Registry to get SWDDIF in the wrfout files. To my surprise I often find negative values within my grid for times near sunset. The same is observed near sunrise, but less frequent. I looked at the WRF code, but could not find safeguards agains negative values. Could negative values...

Dear Ming Chen

Please can you check the URL. I am getting the following message:

solar azimuth angle

Solar zenith angle or cosine of this value is included in the wrfout files.
I would like to get the solar azimuth angle as well.
Does anyone know how to do this?

wrf-solar

I found a version of WRF dedicated to solar energy, which is named wrf-solar.
This s/w is based on wrf v3.6.
Is anyone aware of this s/w and knows whether or not upgrades are planned to bring the s/w in line with WRF v4.x.?

Re: SWDOWN has zero values only

Dear Ming Chen
Sorry for not answering sooner.
I made a silly mistake.
The run started and ended during the night, hence no sunlight and swdown is zero.

SWDOWN has zero values only

One of the variables in my wrfout file is SWDOWN. Unfortunately all values are zero. I suppose I have to set certain physics options in the namelist.wrf file. I have inspected the fortran code, but was unable to figure out which options I should use. I am running WRF V3.9. Hope someone can provide c...
