Re: Can UPP 9.00 be used to post-process WRF?

1. UPP v9.0.0 should still work to post-process WRF output as it is still used operationally (e.g. HRRR). However, we did not test the capability to process WRF for this version as we no longer provide community support for WRF. You can give it a try as it should work, but if you run into issues, yo...

Re: Problems with copygb on small areas

Unfortunately, UPP no longer supports GRIB1 and copygb, so we can't look into it further, but this certainly sounds like it could be the issue. I see in your grid definition, that your longitude goes from 139.108 to 139.944 which does not encompass a distance of 1 degree longitude. Did you try incre...

Adding those two variables in the Registry should have fixed the output of precipitation type.

Re: Adding new field in control file

The field 'TEMP AT 10 M" is not a field that can be output from the WRF model. This is why you get 0's in your output. If you have 10M TMP in your WRF output, perhaps you can try adding it to the src/unipost/INITPOST.F routine (for reading WRF output) following these instructions https://dtcenter.or...

Re: UPP fails to convert files

Thank you for sending that - I just wanted to check some things. I don't see issues with the time. Just to be sure, in your run script do you have startdate=2020111400 and then your fcst hours based off that initial date? I don't see errors about this, but your wrfout has the variable P_HYD and it l...

Re: UPP fails to convert files

Can you send the full unipost.out file for at least the grib2. It seems there might be an issue reading in the data, it doesn't look like it is reading in your pressure field and time correctly, but that info would be toward the beginning of the log. I realize the log file gets quite large with the ...

Re: UPP stops after having processed 1 file

This is an error that we have seen before and is likely caused by your version of MPI not getting along with the use of the stdin 'unit 5' for I/O. Try editing the WRFPOST.f routine and change all instances of unit '5' to '4' (starting with L217 where the error first occurs). Depending on your UPP v...

Re: How the upp calculate the icing index?

There are different icing output options. Which specific icing field are you trying to output? This will be the name in your grib1 (wrf_cntrl.parm) or grib2(postcntrl.xml; postxconfig-NT.txt) parameter file that you are using for your run.

This was a known issue for the V3.1 release of UPP: GRID DEFINITION INCORRECT FOR NMM Problem: The initialization routine for NMM has not been updated to output correct grid projection values. Solution: A new INITPOST_NMM.f file with valid grib2 grid description will be provided when available. And ...

Re: total cloud on Pressure surface

You can add a new variable by adding 2 new lines to the parm file. The parm file is a fixed format so just be sure it is aligned the same as the other parameters in the file. Just turn on any pressure levels you desire. (CLD FRAC ON P SFCS ) SCAL=( 3.0) L=(00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 00000 0...

Hi, I am not sure I understand what you mean as a 3D field. Cloud fraction is available and can be output on pressure levels. CLD FRAC ON P SFCS in the wrf_cntrl.parm For example, here is example UPP output using ncl_filedump (requires NCL to dump the file this way) of TCDC on isobaric levels TCDC(p...

Hi Josh, What compiler are you using to build UPP? We have seen this exact issue with the PGI compiler, but never with GNU or Intel. We no longer test or debug issues with PGI. If PGI is not the issue, then feel free to send a sample file and I can see if I can re-create it on my end. Let me know if...

Re: Problem with grib output at sub hour period

We are aware of an issue in the code with the time-stamp for sub-hourly output, which causes issues reading files in some downstream applications. This has only been an issue for accumulated and time-averaged fields and has been observed for both grib1 and grib2 output. This was first discovered wit...

Re: missing field in grib output

That's right, If it is not in your wrfout, then WRF isn't outputting it. It would be best to ask the WRF team about outputting this. You want to make sure that this is turned on in your WRF registry. For example, in your WRF/Registry/Registry.EM_COMMON, the IO column (8th column) needs to have the h...

Re: missing field in grib output

Hello, For the 'MAX 10m WIND SPEED' variable, UPP reads in the field 'WSPD10MAX' from your WRF output file. If this field is not present in your wrfout or if it is zero-filled, then UPP would not output it in your grib file. Can you check that this field is being output by WRF and that it is not zer...

Re: Is there documentation on how the diagnostics are computed in UPP for the WRF model?

We do have a technical document that describes a number of diagnostic output fields. The diagnostics described are either generated within UPP or directly by the WRF-ARW, although this is not an exhaustive list of all diagnostics that UPP can output. Please see the attached document.

Re: UPP stops after having processed 1 file

Hello, Looking at your unipost.out logfile, it looks to me like you are just putting in the wrong startdate. UPP expects the startdate of your model run, which looks to be 2020-09-05_06:00:00. I expect this is the startdate for d01? In your WRF output, if you do an 'ncdump -h', there will be 2 dates...

Hello, I don't know of a reason as to why it wouldn't work, but this has not been tested since we don't test old UPP versions with new WRF releases, so I can't guarantee it. We always recommend obtaining the latest version of the UPP code unless you are trying to continue a pre-existing project. Fee...

Re: I am running UPP in parallel, but it fails.

This may be a memory issue, try increasing the number of CPUs or spreading them out across nodes (e.g. increase ptiles). We also know of one version of MPI (mpich v3.0.4) that does not not work with UPP. A work-around was found by modifying the UPP/src/unipost/WRFPOST.f routine to change all unit 5 ...

We have received feedback that some parallel builds do not always increase the performance. UPP was optimized for operational use at NCEP. You may see that there is little increase in performance for serial versus parallel on your platform. We are looking into these parallel performance issues.
