Re: speccing and pricing a new cluster

Thanks for the response, but unfortunately that FAQ isn't really helpful for us. We've been running WRF for over 10 years, on a variety of hardware, and are fairly knowledgeable about what the FAQ goes over. I'm primarily interested in new trends in hardware, and whether they'll work well for us. Ou...

speccing and pricing a new cluster

Hello all... In my job I run a number of WRF configurations for wind energy forecasting purposes. An example includes CONUS at 9km, with several 3km and 1km nests of fairly significant sizes for different regions. Since this is for forecasting, we distribute them over multiple nodes to get good perf...

Will do. Thanks for the help.

Re: unwanted wrfrst creation AFTER a restart (WRF 4.1.1)

I haven't seen any issues, but then I have been doing my restarts at times that align with my input data (GFS) intervals, which seems to be what the document is suggesting to be good. Also, FWIW, the text I quoted with the warning came from the DTC website, but it was specifically referencing WRF V3...

Re: unwanted wrfrst creation AFTER a restart (WRF 4.1.1)

If you haven't already, can you try to add 'override_restart_timers = .true.' to the &time_control section of the namelist and see if that makes a difference? Thanks! I hadn't tried it (I didn't know the option existed), but I just did. It did the trick, but I'm curious about the ramifications. A w...

Re: unwanted wrfrst creation AFTER a restart (WRF 4.1.1)

OK, after investigating, I don't believe that it continues to write wrfrst files "every 9 hours" (from this example). It DOES write a set of wrfrst at 9 hours after the restart, but does not repeat this at 18, 27, 36, etc hours. Just to be clear, if restart_interval was 360 in the initial WRF run (a...

unwanted wrfrst creation AFTER a restart (WRF 4.1.1)

Hi - I've got a problem with WRF 4.1.1. After a restart, it continues to create wrfrst files - even though I've changed restart_interval such that none should be created. For example, an initial run has restart files written every 9 hours (restart_interval = 540). I restart the run using those files...

Re: problem with multiple geog_data_res resolutions

Problem solved. None of the index files for all of the standard topography datasets include the "filename_digits" field. Presumably the default value is 5, which works for all of the standard topography. But for the 3s topography, filename_digits needs to be 6 - and has been set in the index file. I...

Re: problem with multiple geog_data_res resolutions

Also, for what it's worth, I've done a few more tests, using two much smaller domains - just to make sure there wasn't anything odd about the relatively large domains I was using. These three versions work: geog_data_res = 'default','default' geog_data_res = 'gtopo_3s','gtopo_3s' geog_data_res = 'de...

(RESOLVED) problem with multiple geog_data_res resolutions

Hi all... I'm having a problem with geogrid under WPS-4.1. I have a 3s topography dataset that I use for grids with 1km resolution or finer. It has worked fine for several years on previous versions. What I'm seeing now is that if in my geog_data_res listing it goes from 'default' for the coarse gri...

Re: running WPS with FV3GFS

OK, thanks for the response. I've experimented a bit now (WRF v3.3 and WPS v4.0.3), and I see extremely minimal differences and no problems when using current GFS data. I see much bigger differences between WRF runs using old and new GFS...

Beginning with V4.0 of WPS, the capability to use FV3 GFS data is available.
How about older versions? Any updates to get them to work, or simply use V4 or newer WPS, coupled with our older version of WRF?

Thanks...

Re: problem with DFI and gfdda

For what it's worth, I was able to eventually get my idea to work, though it wasn't quite as simple as I first thought. I ended up having to augment my wrffdda_dXX files with two additional Times. For example, if my original wrffdda_dXX files had the following Times: Times = "2015-12-31_00:00:00", "...

problem with DFI and gfdda

Hello all... I run WRF forecasts for my organization, and I've just begun experimenting with DFI. Our current forecast system uses gfdda for the outer nests, and when I turn on DFI I get warnings and then a fatal error because there are no times in the wrffdda_dXX files that correspond with the forw...
