Re: Temporal changing surface fields: tidal wetlands

Hi, I discussed your issue with our physics expert. They said they wouldn't change the landmask, but maybe modify some key properties and use SST for the water periods. The soil temperature would also need to respond to SST. Is this a long simulation that needs to update SST (typically more than abo...

Hi,
Please take a look at this FAQ that discusses potential reasons for a segmentation fault and see if any of those may apply to your simulation.

Re: Segmentation fault (11) exit

Hi Andrea, The issue regarding the time_step is specific to when the rsl* files show "cfl" errors. Have you checked all of your files to see if there are any cfl errors present? You can do so with this command: grep cfl rsl* If nothing prints out, that likely isn't causing the problem. The problem c...

Re: Printing out cfl values

Hi Ivan, It looks like this variable is something that is currently only used when you are also using adaptive time-step. If you are using that, then you could probably go into either dyn_em/adapt_timestep_em.F, or dyn_em/solve_em.F and put in a print statement for this purpose. You may have to do s...

Re: [Question] WRF Workflow Management – Best Practice Recommendations

Lukas, We currently don't primarily use any specific tools. My group doesn't even use Scala. We only contributed to a project where we created Cloud-WRF for users interested in various cloud computing applications, and Scala was part of that. We currently mostly use our NCAR supercomputer, and I'm s...

Re: Design coarse domain

The resolution ratio between the input data and the first domain can be more than 3:1 - up to about 7:1. If you are using input data with a resolution of 1 degree, you should be safe to use a 15km DX for your parent domain.

Re: wrf.exe keeps running without any progress when increasing the number of processors

@ag1993, What type of input data are you using for this? What is the resolution of that input data? If you are looking for realistic wind values for your time series, then you will still need larger domain sizes and many more vertical levels. We now recommend 45+ vertical levels. If you do not care ...

Re: Maximal speed of run

I'm not sure whether it's accurate to say that you would get the best performance when you have 10 grid cells per direction for each processor. That is the minimum number you can have in each direction, per processor, and since that would be the max number of processors you can use, then perhaps it ...

Re: [Question] WRF Workflow Management – Best Practice Recommendations

Hi Lukas, I'm not sure if this meets all of your criteria, but our group worked closely with a cloud computing company - Scala Computing, which has a WRF application for continuous runs. It allows you to be mostly hands-off, while keeping things monitored. They have scripts that run everything, but ...

Re: Maximal speed of run

Hi, Please take a look at this FAQ that discusses choosing a good number of processors for your domain set-up. I also would like to point out that your domain size is too small for any real application. We recommend at least 100x100 per domain, and that's on the smaller end. Take a look at this web ...

Re: wrf.exe keeps running without any progress when increasing the number of processors

@ag1993, Unfortunately you are limited by the size of your domain, and even if you have access to many processors, you can't run with more than is appropriate. There may be other factors that are slowing down your run - such as specific physics settings, or other settings. If you'd like us to take a...

Re: LAI12 and GREENFRAC in geo_em file v.s LAI and VEGFRA in wrfout file

Hi Chang, You are correct that LAI12 is the Leaf Area Index for 12 months. GREENFRAC is a field interpolated from MODIS FPAR and is a 12-monthly field from geogrid. During the real.exe process, it will be interpolated to the model start time, and stored in the array "vegfra." However, if you're usin...

Re: WRF 4.3 compile problems - eclipse?

@Dea, Before you do the above step I recommended, can you first issue this command? ls -ls phys/module_ra_eclipse.* to see which files are listed. If you do see the files module_ra_eclipse.o module_ra_eclipse.mod then can you just try to recompile, without issuing a 'clean -a' or reconfiguring? Just...

Hi Andrea,
Our "rule" is that each domain should be at least 100x100 (e_we and e_sn values). Take a look at this page for best practice suggestions on setting up your domain.
