Where did you download ERA5 data? Which Vtable did you use to ungrib the ERA5 data?

Alessandro, To answer your question about the boundary settings, yes you can change spec_bdy_width and relax_zone when you run down. A larger number of spec_bdy_width allows more smoother transition between the forcing and the model results. I won't expect that will dramatically change the results. ...

Anna, I don't think anything is wrong in your modified code (module_initialize_real.F). This is also the code that may affect real.exe. HI Stefan,
It turns out that WRF ignores the relax and spec widths, and simply takes the total. It says total-1 = spec width, and the rest is relax. This explains the behavior.

I believe this issue is related to radiation. Can you try the option: radt = 9, 9, 9 and see whether the performance is better?

You may try to set sensible heat flux to zero either in the surface scheme you use, or set it to zero in surface driver. I suppose either way howled work.

I just have one question: when you ungrib ERA5 data, did you include the surface invariant datafile? This is more like an issue that the landsea mask is not available in your input data.

There is no way to restart WRF from a time when no wrfrs file exists. You may restart from the latest time that wrfrst exists, and continue from there.
