I see here that 7.0 is the latest posted release

but it's over a year old. Is the trunk code stable enough that everyone is using it instead?

There's been a focus over the past year on getting the GPU-enabled code in good shape and on implementing the MPAS-A dycore in CAM. One consequence of this is that the CPU-only, stand-alone MPAS-Atmosphere model hasn't received any major updates.

Generally, the 'develop' branch is stable, though I don't know of any significant features there that are not already in MPAS-Atmosphere v7.0. There is a v7.1 bug-fix release planned for the very near future, but this should only address minor (mostly infrastructure) issues. It's possible that an MPAS v8.0 release will take place sometime in Spring 2021.
