We are seeking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to work on sub-hourly precipitation extremes using convection-permitting models. The project is aimed at understanding the processes that will contribute to future potential changes in sub-hourly rainfall extremes over the Mediterranean region, which is frequently exposed to very high-impact severe weather conditions. Using next-generation climate models and innovative approaches to prescribe future climate change scenarios, the candidate will explore posible mechanisms that may lead to increased heavy-rainfall events in the future. The successful candidate will work with Daniel Argüeso (http://danielargueso.com) as part of the EPICC project and within the framework of his Beatriz Galindo fellowship.  The candidate will join the Group of Meteorology of the Department of Physics, which is renowned for its research in severe weather, atmospheric modelling, planetary boundary layer, turbulence and high-resolution climate modelling.

The position is initially for one year with 2 annual extensions upon satisfactory reports to the UIB postgraduate school, and the gross monthly salary is 1353€ at start.

Required skills
- Degree in Physics, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics or related fields
- Candidates must have a Master Degree or equivalent at the start of the appointment

Preferred skills (not mandatory)
- Specific skills in climate science, meteorology or atmospheric sciences
- Knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Python, Matlab)
- Good communication skills in English, written and spoken
- Previous experience with atmospheric models

The deadline is 16 july 2021 through the online application (which will open 13/07/2021). Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Daniel Argüeso (d.argueso@uib.es) for further information and details on the application process.
