Dr. Craig Ferguson, Research Associate Professor at the University at Albany’s Atmospheric Sciences Research Center, is recruiting a postdoctoral associate to conduct research on mesoscale land-atmosphere interactions. The successful applicant will join a strong, interdisciplinary team of hydrologists, meteorologists, and instrumentalists working to implement and tune a new vegetation root-groundwater interaction scheme into the National Water Model. The successful applicant will lead WRF single column- and regional climate model sensitivity studies in close collaboration with scientists in NASA’s Hydrological Sciences Laboratory. Model performance will be evaluated using site-based hydrological measurements, surface flux measurements, and planetary boundary layer profilers, as well as satellite-based atmospheric and vegetation remote sensing products. This project will improve understanding and modeling of the role that vegetation drought stress plays in hydroclimate and its predictability.

The position is based at the University at Albany’s new state-of-the-art ETEC building, where the successful applicant will have opportunities to interact with partners from the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, New York State Mesonet, and Center of Excellence in Weather & Climate Analytics.

Required Education:
• Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering or other climate-related science since October 2019.

Required Qualifications:
• Prior experience and significant level of expertise in any of the following: land-atmosphere interactions, planetary boundary layer processes, mesoscale meteorology, evapotranspiration, WRF regional climate modeling, WRF single column modeling, hydrologic modeling, land data assimilation, and space- and land-based remote sensing of the troposphere.
• Prior experience with emphasis on model code development and evaluation, and interpreting results from numerical models.
• Prior experience and significant level of expertise using scripting tools (e.g., Python, BASH) to automate model simulations and data analysis on high performance computing servers.
• Efficient scientific programming skills (e.g., Python, C, Fortran, Matlab, R, and NCL).
• Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills in English.
• At least two prior peer-reviewed publications.
• Ability to work independently, be creative and innovative, and multitask.

Desirable Qualifications:
• Proficiency in WRF regional climate and/or single column modeling.
• Prior experience performing sensitivity or uncertainty quantification, including data assimilation approaches.
• Previous experience using Git and GitHub for code management.
• Previous experience with the use and analysis of satellite remote sensing products from AIRS, IASI, SMAP, GRACE, MODIS, GOES-R, and ECOSTRESS, among others.
• Previous experience with the use and analysis of surface meteorological (e.g., mesonet), AmeriFlux, ACARS, or ARM SGP (i.e., doppler lidar, AERI, and Raman lidar) observations, for investigation of the interactions between the land surface and the atmospheric boundary layer.
