Does Real use parent domains for a late-started inner nest?

Hi WRF community,

I wasn't able to find an answer to this in the WRF user guide, though I suspect this information is out there somewhere...

My question is whether or not a WRF simulation with an inner domain started after the parent domain uses the parent domain to update/replace the initial condition for the inner nest. Real.exe generates the initial conditions for all grids, but I'm wondering if the inner-domain initial condition is replaced by information from the parent domain once it reaches the inner-domain start time.

Thanks all!

If the child domain starts later than the parent domain, I would recommend that you set

input_from_file = .true., .false.,

In this case the initial condition for the child domain will be derived from the simulation of parent domain. This will keep the fields consistent between parent and child domain.

Hi Ming Chen, as a follow-up, when I run ndown.exe, do you know if the new wrfinput_d02 it produces is downscaled from d01, or if this is just information from the met_em files?

wrfinput_d02 is from wrfout_d01, except that more detailed surface information (e.g., terrain height, landuse type, etc.) is included.
