Does regional MPAS requires global initial conditions?

Hello! I have already done some work with global variable-resolution MPAS meshes but it is my first time working with regional MPAS. Does it requires global initial conditions for running or can I have just a subset for the region of interest?

A regional MPAS run doesn't require global initial condition. Instead, you need to:
(1) create regional mesh
(2) produce initial and lateral boundary conditions for regional MPAS
(3) run regional MPAS.
