Guidance on Coupling ParFlow with WRF

Hi everyone,

I’m new to both WRF and ParFlow, and I’m trying to couple them for a project. The problem is, I’m not even sure where to start! I’ve looked at some documentation, but it’s a bit overwhelming, and I’m struggling to figure out the basic steps involved in setting up the coupling.

Here’s what I’m working with:
- WRF version: 4.5.2
- My goal: simulating groundwater and surface water interactions with atmospheric feedbacks.

Could anyone guide me on where to begin? For example:
- Are there specific tools or scripts I should use?
- What files or settings need to be prepared in each model?
- Any tutorials, papers, or other resources you’d recommend?

I’d be really grateful for any advice or pointers to help me get started! Thanks so much in advance.

Best,
Zahra

We don't have specific tools that can be used to coiple WRF with other models.

I guess you need to know what variables are needed in the interface of the two models.
- Any tutorials, papers, or other resources you’d recommend?
Please take a look at the documents here, which describes how to add new irrigation scheme to WRF. I suppose this work might be similar to what you intend to do. Specifically, please pay attention to what variables from WRF the newly scheme use and what variables are updated and send back to WRF. The interface between the new scheme and WRF is another important issue you need to understand.
Hope this is helpful for you.

Thanks, Ming! I’ll check out the docs and focus on the interfaces. Really appreciate your help!
