How to simulate tropical deep convection with WRF idealization?

Hello,

I am a regular user of the WRF model. I have always conducted experiments with real cases, but this time I am trying an idealized experiment for the first time. What I aim to observe is deep convection rapidly growing near the tropospheric boundary in tropical regions. To this end, I performed a simple test using the em_convrad option. As a result, I observed that very small-scale convection randomly forms and dissipates quickly. However, these convective cells only grow to about 5-6 km, and most appear to be shallow convection, which is not suitable for me.

I would like to form isolated warm bubbles (to investigate deep convection related gravity waves) as shown in the attached image, with a tropical background. However, since em_convrad creates random convection, it doesn't seem suitable for my needs. Could you recommend an idealization tool that would be more appropriate for observing tropical deep convection? Additionally, if I were to use the tool you suggest, I wonder if it would be possible to create tropical conditions similar to those provided by em_convrad within that model.

I’m not sure where to begin, and I would be very grateful for any guidance you can provide. Thank you so much for your help!

Also,,, it seems that most warm bubble experiments do not use a radiation scheme. Could you confirm if this is the case? I would appreciate your insight on this as well.

Hi,
I first would like to apologize for the long delay in response. This email got "hidden" deep down in my notifications. I assume you're still trying to figure this out. If you haven't seen this section of the Users' Guide, it could be helpful with information about modifying the test cases. Perhaps you can modify the sounding and/or the code to make it do what you want. The code to modify the em_convrad case is the dyn_em/module_initialize_ideal.F file. Once you make modifications, cave that file and then recompile the code. Since you're not changing the Registry, you can simply just compile, without needing to clean or reconfigure the code.

If you're unable to make this particular idealized case work, perhaps you could make some modifications to the em_tropical_cyclone case, or the em_quarter_ss case. The Users Guide chapter than contains the section in the above link may have additional useful details in other sections besides just the linked section.
