Question About GSI vs. WRFDA for Data Assimilation

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on some experiments using GSI for data assimilation and wanted to get your thoughts on a few things.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:
  • Ran WRF-Chem for my study period at 00 and 12 UTC.
  • Used wrapper_gen_be_gsi.ksh to generate the background error covariance.
  • Ran GSI using run_gsi_chem.ksh.
  • Used the resulting wrf_inout file to update my WRF initial conditions.
Now I’m shifting focus to WRFDA-3DVAR, and I have a few questions:
  1. What are the main differences between GSI and WRFDA?
  2. Is it correct to say that GSI is not a pure 3DVAR or 4DVAR system?
  3. Based on your experience, which system would you recommend using for atmospheric chemical data assimilation?
  4. Has anyone done a direct comparison between the results from GSI and WRFDA?

I’d really appreciate any insights or suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Best,
Naser

Naser,

I am sorry that we no longer provide support for WRFDA due to limited human power. However, please take a look at the documents here, which provides helpful information for WRFDA.

Dear Chen,

Thank you for your reply.
I am sorry to hear that.
I will try to find myself.
