Running GFS-FNL for WRF

For those who have tried using FNL in WRF:

1. May I know which GFS-FNL data should I select when I download via RDA?

2. Also, which time interval? Is the 6-hour forecast same as 6-hour analysis?

I would recommend using GFS data, either forecasts or analysis should be fine. This is because GFS resolution is 0.25 degree, which is better than the NFL resolution that is half degree or one degree.

GFS forecast products are at 3-hour interval, while its analysis data is 6-hour interval. Frequent update of lateral boundary condition may yield better results. Based on this idea, I would recommend using GFS 3-hour interval data.

Thank you for your reply. Would you know which meteorological input data should I select in the RDA?

I have already selected:

Geopotential height
Landmask
ice cover
Pressure
Pressure reduced to MSL
Relative humidity
Specific humidity
U,V wind component
Temperature
Volumetric soil moisture content

Did I miss anything else?

I don't think you should select each individual variables for download from RDA. Please download the entire global gfs datafile, then run ungrib.exe to process these data.

Dear Sir,
I have been trying WRF-ELEC from more than 30 days. I have attached the namelist also. I am giving met files from WPS as input to WRF-ELEC> But i am not ssuccessful,
Please help me. WIth nssl_ipelec (max_dom) =0, my elec model is running successfully but output values are zero. If we keep nssl_ipelec (max_dom)= 3, the WRF run is failing. WHat to do i am unable to solve. Please help me sir.

Hi, is it ok using analysis and forecast data together? I downloaded analysis data for 00 06 12 and 18 hour (f000.grib2s), and forecast data for 03 09... (.f003.gribs). And now the fnl data also have 0.25 resolution. How should we choose them?

We recommend using analysis data because analysis data contains various observations.
Both FNL and GFS are fine, although some users report that FNL is better than GFS when they run severe storm cases.
