The user's guide namelists shows this for land_cat choices

num_land_cat21number of land categories from input data;
=20 : for MODIS
=21 : for MODIS if lake category is included; which is default for WPS
=24 : for USGS
=28 : for USGS if lake category is included
=40 : for NLCD2006; North America only

is there any reference material that can be added to MODIS and USGS that shows what the land categories are?

Please look at the file 'VEGPARM.TBL' in WRF/run directory. All the land categories are specified in this file.

For MODIS land cover categories, you can refer to the MODIS Land Cover Type Yearly L3 Global 500m product, which provides land cover classification at a global scale. You can access this dataset and related documentation through the NASA Earthdata Search tool or the MODIS Land Cover Product website.

For USGS land cover categories, you can refer to the National Land Cover Database (NLCD), which provides land cover data for the United States. The NLCD classifies land cover into various categories such as urban, forest, agriculture, wetlands, etc. You can access the NLCD data and documentation through the USGS National Map website or the NLCD website.

These resources should provide detailed information about the specific land cover categories used in MODIS and USGS datasets, allowing you to match them with the land_cat choices mentioned in the user's guide.
