./ungrib.exe: ERROR: edition_num: unable to open GRIBFILE.AAA

Hi, I am running ./ungrib.exe of WPSv3.9.1 (WRF Preprocessing System) in a NCAR Derecho HPC. It used to run fine previously without any errors within the same directory. All the required files are in the directory. I use era5 data from ‘/gpfs/csfs1/collections/rda/data/ds633.0/’ for surface and pressure to create the GRIBFILE.AAA…. files. Also, I used the precompiled version 4.1 (just to check if it is the version issue) of WPS available in ~wrfhelp, and the same issue persists.
The GRIBFILE.AAA ... are created using ./link_grib.csh path_to era5/ .

2024-10-28 13:38:11.920 --- output format is WPS
2024-10-28 13:38:11.920 --- INFORM: Interval value: 3600 seconds or 1.000000 hours
2024-10-28 13:38:11.920 --- Path to intermediate files is ./
2024-10-28 13:38:11.943 --- ERROR: edition_num: unable to open GRIBFILE.AAA

Can anyone please help or guide me in solving this issue? Thank you so much in Advance.

Thanks
Julum

I cannot offer any assistance, but I can say that I have had the same problem. It was working well for me last week. However, near the end of last week and the beginning of this week, I started getting this error. I, too, use ERA5 data from the '/glade/campaign/collections/rda/data/ds633.0/' directory.
As best I can tell, the Vtable I am using (ERA5-interim.pl) works on GRIB1 and the ERA5 data should also be in GRIB1.

I'm sorry I don't know what's going on, but I hope that someone with more knowledge chimes in to help the both of us.

This error message indicates that ungrin cannot open GRIBFILE.
Please confirm that you have run /link_grib.csh to link all ERA files to GRIBFILE.

Hi Ming,

Yes, I ran ./link_grib.csh, which created GRIBFILE.AAA to GRIBFILE.AWN, total 586 as the same number of era5 files.

Thanks

I copied your data and tried to read it by a number of different ways, e.g., wgrib, wgrib2, g1print, g2print. Noe of them works, indicating that your data is deteriorated.

This is not an issue of WPS. Please re-download these dat and try again.

Hi Ming,

I just got notified by the CISL help desk that the RDA GRIB files are about to be phased out. So, it created the issue.
"Important notice regarding RDA ERA5 GRIB files: Please note that DECS is in the process of completely phasing out whole file download, subsetting, and campaign storage access to RDA ERA5 GRIB files, with a planned end of access to the GRIB format occurring near the end of October 2024 or beginning of November 2024. Please transition to using the netCDF files produced by DECS for the RDA. Thank you for your interest and use of RDA ERA5 data."

I don't know if we can use ungrib with the netcdf files. OR if there is any solution to it, other than downloading the required GRIB files.

Thanks

This is a good question. Do we need to now download ERA5 grib files onto glade/derecho to use it? Will there be an option to process netcdfs?

Hi Ming,

RDA is phasing out ERA5 GRIB data from /gpfs/csfs1/collections/rda/data/ds633.0/ (NCAR RDA Dataset d633000), however they will continue with the netcdf files. With only the NetCDF files now available, I face the challenge of either downloading extensive data directly from ERA5 or finding an effective way to convert NetCDF files to a GRIB format that is compatible with WPS ungrib.

Since I need to run WRF for 40 years, downloading data would be resource-intensive. Could you advise on any recommended techniques or tools for efficiently converting ERA5 NetCDF files into GRIB format, that ungrib of WPS accepts? If any workflows or best practices exist to streamline this process, they would be invaluable.

Thank you very much for your guidance and support.

I'm having a similar problem. I'm also curious if anyone has kept track of the specific variables, file types, etc if you need to go through the Copernicus data store.

@julum_wrf:
ungrib cannot process netCDF data. Thereby, we need to create a new package that can process netCDF data and produce intermediate file.
We will look into this issue and see what we can do.
