URBPARM_LCZ.TBL parameters for New York City

Hello WRF Community,

I am using the MLUCM (sf_urban_physics=2) to simulate the urban climate of New York City. For this, I must modify the urban morphology parameters in the URBPARM_LCZ.TBL file. Unfortunately, I have found very little documentation on how to do this. I need some help with this. Where could I find information or the procedure to generate these urban geometry parameters for NYC for the URBPARM_LCZ.TBL file?

Thanks for the help!

Hi,
I am not an expert on LCZ and its urban morphology parameters. I found that the following papers provide abundant information regarding LCZ. Would you please take a look? Hope they are helpful for you.
  • Stewart ID, Oke TR. Local Climate Zones for Urban Temperature Studies. Bull Am Meteorol Soc. 2012;93(12):1879-1900. doi:10.1175/BAMS-D-11-00019.1

Hello again Mr. Chen,

Thanks again for all the help!

I am an undergraduate student working on modeling NYC's urban climate using the MLUCM (sf_urban_physics=2). I have incorporated the 100-m LCZ information into my simulation and modified the URBPARM_LCZ.TBL parameters according to NYC's urban geometry. However, after running the simulation, I have not obtained satisfactory results. For example, I cannot distinguish spatial features such as Central Park, and the water bodies are not uniformly cooler than the land. I have attached a file with some snippets of the maps I produced for reference.

I am seeking help and guidance on this matter. Is there anything I might be doing wrong or anything I should modify to get better results? For example, should I consider adding a fourth domain for finer resolution, using better resolution data, or analyzing a longer period of time to let the simulation stabilize before producing accurate results?

For reference, I am also attaching my namelist.wps, namelist.input, and URBPARM_LCZ.TBL files.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!

Hi Tarmactuna,

Were you able to obtain the urban morphology data for the URBPARM_LCZ.TBL file? If so, could you share how? I'm working on a city for which I don't have this data. Is there any way to get it, or should I use the default parameters in the file?

Thanks for your help!

Best regards,
Sushmita
