The Smart Sponge City Planning and Construction Research Institute of the Zhuhai Tsinghua Innovation Center is urgently seeking a research scientist who is proficient in scientific programming for climate and hydrological modeling.
This position will support regional climate model simulations as part of a team including researchers at the University of Washington. The project supports planning for Sponge Cities in China by assessing the resilience of the proposed water management systems to the likely future increases in heavy precipitation. Regional climate will be performed using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF, http://www.wrf-model.org) community mesoscale model, and hydrologic simulations with WRF-Hydro and HEC-Ras models.

The Tsinghua Innovation Center is one of the fastest growing research institutes in South China. We have access to state-of-the-art supercomputing and data storage resources. The project is funded by the China Government.

Project tasks:
• Collaborate with UW team to develop and maintain software to prepare and evaluate global climate model data for input to the WRF model.
• Collaborate with UW team to development and maintain code to support simulations with the WRF model.
• Manage WRF model simulations on a High-Performance Computing (HPC) system, including compiling the model and managing model runs.
• Maintain data archive of WRF model results.

Required Qualifications:
• Master’s degree or above in atmospheric science, engineering, computer science, or related field with an emphasis in scientific computing in a High-Performance Computing (HPC) environment.
• Broad knowledge of computer science including HPC and supercomputing technology.
• Expert skill in the use of the use of the Linux-based operating system including scripts (e.g. perl, shell-scripts, job scheduling).
• Expert skill in working with large codes (100,000+ lines) for scientific modeling or simulation.
• Expert skill in data processing and analysis software appropriate to climate applications such as Matlab, Python, IDL, or NCAR Command Language (NCL).
• Experience with atmospheric and/or hydrologic models such as WRF, HRF-hydro, HEC-RAS, etc.
• Experience programming and debugging in Fortran.
• Experience developing software in a team environment.
• English language proficiency; Chinese desired.
