Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow in Air Quality Prediction and Forecasting (Ref: 025275)

Grade: UH7 (Research Fellow) and UH8 (Senior Research Fellow)
FTE: Full time, working 37 hours per week (1.0 fte)
Duration of Contract: Two fixed term posts: one for 24 months (Research Fellow) and one for 36 months (Senior Research Fellow) with possibility of extension depending on performance and available funding. These posts are available immediately.
Location: College Lane Campus, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield.
Main duties & responsibilities
The post holders will be required to undertake research, working collaboratively with colleagues at UH and partner organisations as appropriate. You will be expected to contribute to and lead projects on understanding of atmospheric processes that affects air quality prediction and forecasting for different regions of the world with the use of models supported by observations. Your duties will also include:
i. Contributing to ongoing and future air quality, meteorology and climate research programmes including modelling and forecasting air quality
ii. Responsible for data processing and dissemination of outcomes
iii. Maintaining and updating the University’s Unix/Linux high performance cluster
iv. Problem solving day to day issues related to research projects
v. Contributing to the development of processes-based approaches including use of large datasets of model predictions and observations
vi. Seeking external funding
vii. Supervising student projects and undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Skills and experience needed
You will have experience of working in a research environment in Air Quality Prediction and Forecasting, will have a record of, and strong commitment to, presenting research findings and to publishing in high quality journals. You will have excellent communication skills. Experience of mentoring and supervising junior research staff and students would be an advantage. You will have strong experience in developing and applying advanced atmospheric models for air quality, meteorological and climate research. You will have strong skills in programming and problem solving including running complex codes on a Unix/Linux cluster. You will be skilled in pre-processing input data for running models such as WRF/CMAQ and WRF-Chem and particularly in preparing atmospheric emissions as model inputs. You will have experience of the use of observational datasets in combination with modelling for atmospheric process analysis. Experience in atmospheric measurements, laboratory chemical analysis will be an advantage. Preference will be given to excellent candidates that can take up the post as soon as possible.
Senior Research Fellow post
This post will be available for highly skilled individuals who have substantial proven experience of working in a research environment and of submitting successful funding applications. You will have appropriate experience of leading and managing projects and teams and be able to develop a relevant research area within CACP. You will be expected to develop and submit high quality funding proposals to a range of national and international agencies and to establish new collaborative partnerships.
Qualifications required
You must have an undergraduate honours degree at a minimum 2:2 (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (e.g. Physics, Chemistry, Meteorology, Mathematics) and a PhD in a relevant subject related to air quality and/or meteorological modelling, atmospheric composition with strong computer programming elements based on Unix based cluster systems
