A position as an Assistant Project Scientist is available in the Earth Research Institute and the Department of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The successful candidate will participate in a research project led by Professor Leila Carvalho ( and must have expertise in the following fields: a) boundary layer in mountain areas in coastal environments, b) down slope windstorms, c) regional modeling in complex terrain using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, and d) experience in organizing field experiments. Experience in maintenance of meteorological flux towers is highly desired.

The successful candidate will be primarily involved in the Sundowner Winds Experiment (SWEX) Field Campaign, and will help in collecting and interpreting data sets from multiple instrumental platforms. Moreover, the candidate is expected to perform simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Research tasks will include testing and validating WRF simulations and integrating results multiple platforms.

This is a full-time position with Dr. Leila Carvalho. Competitive salary and benefits commensurate on experience. The initial appointment is for one year. Continuation beyond one year will be based on performance and availability of funding. The start date for this position will fall within 10/1/2020 and 1/1/2021. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship

Basic qualifications: Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, or a closely related field, at the time of application.

Additional qualifications: 3 years of experience running realistic and idealized experiments with the WRF model, experience in boundary layer studies with observations and WRF boundary layer experiments. Linux environment and programming skills.

Preferred qualifications: Experience with IDL, Python, NCL, FORTRAN. Appointees should have experience working independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Previous postdoctoral experience (less than 6 years) is also encouraged.
