Cloud coverage/fraction output as bitmap

My objective is to somehow extract cloud coverage data as a simple image with no plot, just raw data for use in another application for simulating semi-realistic clouds over time in a 2D plane.

I've followed the single domain case for simulating Hurricane Matthew and I've managed to get some kind of output (not sure what it shows) as per the plotting tutorials.

I'm trying to understand how to obtain and plot that data as plainly as possible, I understand the cloud fraction variable is CLDFRA, but beyond that I am stumped.

Edit: In other words, to try and express this as simply as I can, I want to get a series of images that shows the cloud coverage from a simulation for every step, with no other plot axes/GUI at all
