Coordinate system for MPAS-A GWD outputs (dtaux3d, dtauy3d)

WHY

New member
Hi everyone,

I am doing research on gravity wave drag with the MPAS-A model. However, I am confused by the description of GWD output variables (e.g., dtaux3d and dtauy3d). Are they defined in Earth-relative coordinates, or in another coordinate system?

If they are grid-relative, how should I rotate them to Earth-relative coordinates?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello,
The GWD output diagnostic variables are defined in Earth-relative coordinates -- dtaux3d and dusfcg pertain to the zonal (u) velocity component, and dtauy3d and dvsfcg pertain to the meridional (v) velocity component.
