Scripps Institution of Oceanography is searching for two positions related to research in the area of GNSS radio occultation remote sensing observations of extreme weather events and their assimilation into numerical weather models:

Atmospheric science and GNSS Research Data Analyst (#114176)

The position supports atmospheric science research efforts to improve forecasting of high impact weather and to support tropical climate observations that feedback into longer term global weather forecasting challenges with significant societal impacts.

This Research Data Analyst is responsible for developing and promoting state-of-the-art Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) radio occultation (RO) instrumentation and techniques from airborne platforms. Projects include using RO observations to improve forecasting of Atmospheric Rivers, and using RO observations to elucidate the properties of atmospheric waves for improving their representation in climate models.

Applies programming skills to analyze data, and develops software for data collection, processing, and automation. Manages a growing GNSS instrumentation lab, takes responsibility for integrating, testing, and operating a range of GNSS equipment and associated hardware, supervises and trains junior personnel in its use. Designs and implements research experiments that deploy RO sensors, collects and processes the resulting datasets. Work may require travel to remote locations for field deployments with variable hours for work shifts.

While this position is specific to research in GNSS radio occultation, candidates with a desire to learn new techniques and have comparable experience in other remote sensing techniques will be considered. The position requires a demonstrated ability to supervise, train, and delegate work to junior scientists with diverse backgrounds. The position is in the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography https://scripps.ucsd.edu/. Research in IGPP spans a broad range of topics in geophysics including seismology, geodynamics, geodesy and crustal deformation, geomorphology, planetary physics, geomagnetism and paleomagnetism, as well as interdisciplinary research in oceanography, meteorology, and climate science carried out in collaboration with the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes https://cw3e.ucsd.edu/.



Data Assimilation and Atmospheric Modeling Scientist (#113796)

The Data Assimilation and Atmospheric Modeling Scientist will conduct synoptic and mesoscale numerical weather prediction experiments to develop techniques to exploit new remote sensing observations for forecast improvement. The research will focus on extreme precipitation events along the US West Coast and, in particular, landfalling atmospheric rivers. This position supports ongoing efforts to develop the use of state-of-the-art GNSS radio occultation observations for climate and atmospheric science research from airborne and spaceborne platforms.

Responsible for assisting in the development of data assimilation capabilities for the numerical weather prediction models at CW3E, utilizing strong programming skills and experience in computational and numerical methods. Implements methods for simulating remotely sensed observational data from 4D numerical model fields and designs forecast experiments using the new remote sensing data.

Uses community models such as the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF), Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS), the Global Forecast System, and /or the Community Earth System Model to design and implement experiments. Employs the community modeling platform called Joint Effort for Data Assimilation Integration (JEDI) for assimilating observational data to improve forecasts of atmospheric rivers.

The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) https://cw3e.ucsd.edu/ is leading the development and implementation of new research and applications capabilities focused on extreme weather and climate events in the Western US. CW3E is developing and implementing weather and climate observations, numerical models and decision support tools focused on atmospheric and land-surface conditions related to extreme events and their impacts. The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) collaborates with the Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) to develop revolutionary new Global Navigation Satellite System technology for atmospheric remote sensing and applying it to high impact weather forecasting and climate problems.
