A question about file extension .nc and .ncf

Hi,
This question might not be appropriate here. But I couldn't find answers , so I am asking here:

I have some files which have two types of extension

.nc
.ncf

I can open these files using ncdump command. I couldn't find out the difference between these extensions.

I understand both extensions are NetCDF supported. Would anyone help me understand the difference between these extensions?

Got an answer form the NETCDF Support group.

NetCDF does not care about the file extension. NetCDF identifies files because they have "CDF" or "HDF" in the first few bytes. The file extension can be whatever you want, or nothing.

Since ncdump works on both files, it looks like they are both netCDF files.

Not a great explanation but at least it is something.
