We are currently seeking a talented Atmospheric Modeller to join our Research and Development team. MetOcean Solutions www.metocean.co.nz is a science-based consultancy and forecast supplier providing specialist numerical modelling and analytical solutions in meteorology and oceanography. As a division of New Zealand’s MetService, MetOcean has the mission to provide accurate and timely national operational ocean forecasts. With offices across New Zealand (Auckland, New Plymouth, Raglan, and Wellington) and in Sydney, Australia (MetraWeather) our international team works on projects and data analysis world-wide. We passionately believe in rigorous scientific method and in applying the latest information technology to data services. With scientific integrity and positive public perception in its core values, MetOcean occupies several niche marine consultancy and service roles and has a rapidly growing forecast and hindcast sector.
We are seeking a self-starter to contribute to MetOcean’s forecasting and hindcast modelling systems by developing, maintaining and monitoring the quality and quantity of system outputs related to scientific meteorological data and Research and deliver innovations that align with the organisations business goals.
Our employees enjoy an open-office, upbeat culture within a coastal town environment in the North Island of New Zealand. This position would be primarily based in Raglan with some opportunity to work from other offices in the future. Raglan is a small beach side town on the West Coast, just a short drive west of Hamilton or a two-hour drive south of Auckland. It is known for its world-class surf, stunning scenery, beautiful beaches and inspiring arts.

To apply, you must have the following skills and experience:
- A postgraduate qualification (M.Sc. or PhD. level) in a relevant physical science
- Expert knowledge of atmospheric modelling, ideally the WRF and/or MPAS atmospheric models
- An understanding of atmospheric physics and dynamics, including a strong background in geophysical fluid dynamics
- Experience analysing and critically assessing meteorological and/or oceanographic model data
- Experience working with, and organising, large geophysical datasets
- General programming ability, including proficiency in Python and Fortran
- Experience working in a Linux HPC environment
- Strong technical and scientific report writing in English, with the ability to communicate complex science to a range of audiences
- Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, manage and track numerous concurrent activities to successful outcomes
The following would be beneficial, but are not essential:
- At least 2 years industry work experience
- Knowledge of ocean-atmosphere coupled processes and modelling
- Experience in hydrological modelling
- Experience running long term model hindcasts
- Involvement in an operational forecasting environment
- Atmospheric model code development
- Experience interacting with large databases
- Experience in working in a DevOps environment
- Experience with Fortran, LaTeX, and MATLAB
- Experience working with Docker
