e_sn, e_we units

Hi,
I am using a lambert geographical system. I am wondering what the units of e_sn and e_we are in this system. Do the units differ if you are using a different system (like polar)?
For example, if I set e_sn to 50....what does that mean? Is it 50 km, a range of 50 points of latitude? Something else?

e_sn and e_we are the number of grids in north-south and east-west directions, respectively. They are independent of map_projection.
