How to combine preBUFR and own mesonet observations?

Hello folks.

I was wondering if there is a preferred method to combine data in (pre)BUFR format and (e.g. mesonet) observations in little_r format.

Can WRFDA work with data in both formats or would one need to convert (pre)BUFR to little_r and then feed it to obsproc?
