Up front disclaimer: I am very new to this...not in an academic setting...and am having to figure things out/learn as I go.

Once WRF is installed, how can I define an area over which I want the model to run, obtain initial data to run the model, and execute the model run over that area.

A good starting place would probably be the WRF Online tutorial: http://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/OnLineTutorial/index.php . The lecture slides from the bi-annual WRF tutorials would also be a complementary source of information: http://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/users/tutorial/tutorial_presentation_summer_2018.htm .
