ClimaCell is embarking on a stealth project that requires a deep understanding and experience with Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) systems and components. We are developing novel techniques for gathering and assimilating weather data into real-time analysis and NWP systems. In addition to working with traditional data sources and modeling outputs, we’re building our own approach for integrating new measurements from proprietary data sources into weather monitoring and forecasting systems, as well as developing new forecast products using all of these data.
As an NWP Project Scientist, you will conduct independent research and development of applications for weather forecasting, real-time weather analysis, data assimilation, and data quality control systems. Most of your work will be spent performing Research to Operations (R2O) by leading a team to build NWP prototypes and demos in a cloud HPC environment and then supporting and expanding those capabilities into operations. A successful candidate will be able to identify a spectrum of solutions for a given problem, building on established successes in the field - but with a keen eye on where ClimaCell can innovate with new approaches.
What it takes
A Ph.D in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or similar is required; a research focus in the field of NWP with emphasis on ensemble-based DA methods is a strong plus
4+ years as a senior scientist including a leadership role is preferred
2+ years experience developing and supporting operational NWP systems (or components) is highly desirable
Leadership experience and a deep understanding and experience with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) data assimilation (DA) system and/or the WRF DA (WRFDA) system is required
Experience and/or extensive familiarity with the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS)
Strong background in developing and supporting NWP systems in an operational setting
Strong background in a Linux development environment including experience with high-performance computing (HPC) is required
To apply please email chandlermoore@climacell.co with a CV/Resume.
