RDA ERA5 GRIB files

ERA5 no longer provides data to initialize WRF in GRIB format; now it provides it in netcdf format.

"Important notice regarding RDA ERA5 GRIB files: Please note that DECS is in the process of completely phasing out whole file download, subsetting, and campaign storage access to RDA ERA5 GRIB files, with a planned end of access to the GRIB format occurring near the end of October 2024 or beginning of November 2024"

What changes need to be made when running WRF using netcdf files instead of GRIB?

When you are using netCDF files as input, they will need to be converted to intermediate file format - the format expected by the metgrid program. We don't yet have an officially-supported set of tools to do this conversion, but see this previous thread, and look at the post from mgduda on 9/1/21. It includes some python scripts and instructions for doing this type of conversion. The scripts are a few years old, so they may need a little work to bring them up to date, and they will need to be modified for your specific data, of course.
