WRF-Chem v4.4.1 simulation with CB05-MADE/SORGAM stopped

Hello,

I am running WRF-Chem v4.4.1 with CB05 and MADE/SORGAM (chem_opt=131). The simulation stopped after two days without any error. I also ran a simulation with chem_opt=132 using the same settings and it worked well. Does anyone know why the simulation with chem_opt=131 stopped? Did I miss anything in the namelist.input?

I have attached the namelist.input and rsl files for your convenience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Suqian,

Unfortunately your logs do not indicate a specific issue, though it is interesting you were able to run with 132 and not 131. Please first ensure you have available disk quota to write. Then my suggestion would be to run your simulation again with an increased debug_level (try 100) so that we have a better idea of where the model failed. Depending on how intensive this simulation is, you may want to simulate a day and create the restart file, and then start from there on day 2 until you get your error.

Hi Jordan,

Thanks for your reply. Enough disk space is available. I tried to run the simulation with debug_leve=100 and the simualation stopped at the same time without error.The rsl files are too large to be attached here. How should I upload the rsl files?

Suqian

Hi Suqian,

No need to attach the full files

e.g., tail -n 1000 rsl.out.0000 >> tail.rsl.out.txt

Do you see any obvious errors?

Hi Jordan,

Sorry about the description in my reply "the simualation stopped at the same time without error". I found errors in the rsl.error.0000 file:

It seems that it was caused by the emisisons that some species are not included in the emission inventory. I am using the NEI 2011 emissions genergated by WRF-Chem 3.7.1 and I think it should be fine because I have force_use_old_data = T in the namelist.input.

I saw two parameters in convert_emiss.F: inew_nei = 0 and inew_ch4 = 1 (default values). The comment for inew_ch4 is "set to 0 if the emission inventory doesn't include CH4". In an older version of WRF-Chem, the comment for inew_ch4 is "set to 1 if using 2011 NEI emissions". I am wondering if my error was related to these two settings?

Hi Suqian,

I don't think the emission errors are your problem since the model proceeds for a while before stopping. Please turn debug_level = 300 and set:

chem_conv_tr = 0,
conv_tr_aqchem = 0,
conv_tr_wetscav = 0,

Please also check your output for spurious concentrations (first check PM2_5_DRY, then maybe CO and SO2)

Hi Jordan,

I have tried to run the simulation with chem_conv_tr = 0, conv_tr_aqchem = 0, conv_tr_wetscav = 0 and the run stopped at the same time without error in the rsl.error files. Attached is the tail of rsl.out.0000. I didn`t check the output because the simulation ran less than two days which is too short for spin-up, and the output may not make much sence. What suggestions do you have to find the issue?

Thanks,
Suqian
