While executing metgrid on WPS 4.3.1 I got ERROR: Error in ext_pkg_write_field
application called MPI_Abort(MPI_COMM_WORLD, 0) - process 0
I am using the GFS data for March 5 2022

Where did you get your GFS data? Can you check whether the forcing data contains soil information?

Would you please download GFS data from NCAR CISL (https://rda.ucar.edu/datasets/ds084.1/), then try again?
The data required by WPS may be contained in different datafiles from the NOAA website. NCAR CISL manage to put all necessary data together, which makes it easy for users to run ungrib and metgrid.
