Downscaling CMIP6 and ERA5 using regional domain (box extraction approach)

Dear Forum,

I would like to downscale CMIP6 and ERA5 data for a case study. Instead of using the full global datasets (surface and 3D pressure fields), can we extract and use only a regional subset (a box covering our area of interest and model domains)?

If this is possible, do we need to make any corresponding changes in the GEOGRID data or any other preprocessing steps?

I would be very grateful if someone could kindly explain the required procedure or any modifications needed to properly set this up.

Saha,

As far as I know, ERA5 data archived at NCAR are global. I don't think they provide regional subsets.

I am not sure of CMIP6. Please send email to help@ucar.edu for more information.

Dear Chen,

Thank you for your kind reply.
I was downloading ERA5 data from COPERNICUS (ERA5 hourly data on pressure levels from 1940 to present), where we can subset (region or time or variables) during downloading or after it.

Anyway, i will mail to UCAR helpdesk as you suggested.
