I plan to generate 1-3-12 km MPAS variable-resolution mesh for our MPAS simulation over the Baltimore-Washington area. I was wondering whether it is feasible based on the current capacity of MPAS. Thanks.
The MPAS Limited-Area Tool can be used to subset a variable-resolution regional mesh. The most closest mesh I can find is the 60-12km mesh posted in MPAS home page. You need to:
(1) run grid_rotate to relocate the fine-mesh area to Baltimore-Washington area,
This will give you a 12-3km mesh that roughly meet your need. However, this mesh cannot go up to 1-km resolution.
If you really need the 1-km mesh, I am thinking that you may need to create a 12-3-1km mesh yourself. The mesh-generation tool is probably able to do so. Honestly, I haven't used this tool to produce high-resolution nested mesh myself. So I am not 100% sure how it works.
