Isolating inland freshwater lakes from general "water" category

In the MPAS-A – MOM6 coupling project, we need to generate a distinct mask for inland freshwater lakes. Standard parameters like the binary "landmask" or "ivgtyp" group oceans and lakes together. Is there a recommended workaround to isolate inland lakes from the general "water" category?

The default land-use input data for MPAS is modis_landuse_20class_30s, which treats oceans and lakes as the same “water” category.

However, an alternative dataset—modis_landuse_20class_30s_with_lakes—is available, which distinguishes lakes from oceans. I suppose this dataset is more appropriate for you.
