MPAS moisture tracking?

Hello All,

I am trying to determine whether MPAS-Atmosphere currently has any capability for water vapor tracing or tagging (e.g., tracking moisture from different source regions or processes).
Specifically, I am interested in:

  1. Whether MPAS has a built-in or community-developed water vapor tracer / moisture tagging framework.
  2. If not, whether there are recommended approaches for implementing moisture source tracking within MPAS.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,
Hadi Zanganeh Kia

Hi Hadi,

As far as I know, MPAS doesn't have the capability to track water vapor. I am not sure whether a passive tracer can be helpful for your case. Please take a look at the document here, which describes in detail how to add tracers to MPAS simulation. Hope it is helpful for you.

Thanks for your response,

Also can you help me with:

1. what are passive tracers typically used for in MPAS?
2. WRF has moisture tracing capacity. Would it benefit the wide research community to add same/similar moisture tracing capacity to MPAS?

Bests,
Hadi

Hi Hadi,

There are no passive tracers used in MPAS at present.
2. WRF has moisture tracing capacity. Would it benefit the wide research community to add same/similar moisture tracing capacity to MPAS?
Can you clarify the "moisture tracing capacity" in WRF? I am not aware of this....
Bests,
Hadi

Hi Hadi,

I understand that is could be confusing. Note that in our officially released WRF codes, we don't have the capability of moisture tracing.

The github branch you posted is from a WRF user, and we don't support codes specifically developed by individual users.

Hope this is helpful for you.
