Problem generating MPAS forecasts.

I am using a variable 15-3km mesh with circular refinement over a region near the South American continent. I created the static files, the invariant file, and the initial GFS conditions (namelist.init_atmosphere and log.init_atmosphere.0000.out). When I run the model, the predictions are not generated due to the problem reported in the log.atmosphere.0000.out file. I would appreciate help in solving this problem.

I am suspicious that something is wrong in your initial datafile.

In your namelist.init_atmosphere, you set config_nfglevels = 38, which is the number of levels for ERA5. For GFS, it should be 34. Can you double check to make sure it is set corrcetly?

Your log.atmosphere.0000.out.txt shows that at certain points, the vertical pressure distribution is not correct, which may be attributed to the wrong verticla seeings in your name,list.init_atmosphere.

Hope this ius helpful for you.

Thank you for the suggestion. I used config_nfglevels = 34 but it didn't work, the problem persists. I really don't know how to solve this problem.

Please clarify:
(1) what data did you use to create initial and lateral boundary conditions for your regional MPAS run? Your previous post indicated that you run with GFS. If so, let me know where you downloaded GFS data.
(2) Please upload your namelist.init_atmosphere ( for both initial and lateral boundary conditions) for me to take a look.
(3) How did you create the static data file for your regional domain?
(4) In your namelist.atmosphere, config_apply_lbcs = false. Note that for regional MPAS simulations, this option must be true, i.e., please set
config_apply_lbcs = true
(5) Did you modify MPAS codes? I ask this because your log file shows that you used 'dirty verison of MPAS v8.2.2'. Is this the officially released MPAS codes?

Hello, I'm not doing regional simulation. I'm using a variable global mesh of 15-3km with refinement over the region of a tropical cyclone. The GFS data is from this path: /glade/campaign/collections/rda/data/d083003/ and using the WRF Pre-Processing System (WPS) for data conversion. I'm following the MPAS tutorial, the difference is that I'm using an invariant file.
I don't recall modifying the MPAS script. The images below are (1-namelist.init_atmosphere and 2-streams.init_atmosphere to create IC).
Thank you

Please upload your files instead of sending screenshots. The screenshots not only create trouble for us to process but also make it hard for others to get complete information when searching the Forum.

By the way, what do you mean by saying "the difference is that I'm using an invariant file"?

Sorry, I'm sending the files I used again. I meant is that I'm following the MPAS tutorial, but the only difference is that I'm using the invariant file, and with the invariant I create the initial conditions (attached files). The MPAS tutorial doesn't have the invariant file, only MPAS-JEDI.

Hi,

I looked at your files. There are a few issues I am concerned. First of all, as I stated in my previous answer, if you run with GFS as input data, then config_nfglevels = 38 is wrong. It should ve 34 for GFS. Second, in your streams.init_atmosphere.txt, you set akara_cir.invariant.nc as input. Is this the standard static data created by init_atmosphere? If not, how did you create this file and what is the difference between this file and the static datafile?

I still believe that the crash of your case is due to wrong input data. It is worth recreating the input data and then try again.
