Reflectivity Data Issues

Hello,

Over the past few days I have been attempting to run simulations of the August 2020 derecho at both 3km by itself and 3km with a 1km nest. I was able to successfully run a 3km simulation on its own with and could plot all variables (including reflectivity) just fine. However, once I tried to run the nested domain, not changing anything except adding the nest, I started running into issues with trying to plot reflectivity. The simulation itself runs without error, but when I try to plot reflectivity using the files from the nested domain, it will not work. I also tried to plot the reflectivity from the 3km files generated from the nested run (separate from the files from the 3km-only run). I was able to get it to plot, but once it hits the time where the nest kicks in, the plots begin to have issues. I attached the loops to show what is happening between the 3km run with the nest and the 3km run by itself, as well as the namelist I used. This only happens with reflectivity and not any other variables I tried. This is on WRF v4.4.2, using CAM microphysics/radiation schemes and Grell-Freitas cumulus scheme. I tried with the cumulus scheme turned on for the nest and then again with it off and it did not solve the problem (both runs had it turned on for the parent domain). Any thoughts on why this is happening?

Thanks,
Nick

Hi, Nick,

do_radar_ref = 1 only works for mp_physics = 2,4,6,7,8,10,14,16,24,26,28

In your case, mp_physics = 11, which is not an option that can work well with do_radar_ref = 1

Can you switch to a different microphysics scheme and try again?
