RUC LSM with GFS initialization?

Hi,
I have read that RUC LSM is intended to be initialized from (unsurprisingly) RUC. Is it also possible to initialize WRF w/RUC LSM (sf_surface_physics=3) with GFS? Are all the required data fields present in the GFS output? I have confirmed the model runs at least on this initialization.

Yes you can initialize WRF with RUC using GFS products. However, please note that a nameless option flag_sm_adj is added to WRFV4.1 to make the initialization physically reasonable. For more details, please see the code share/module_soil_pre.F.

Older WRF versions don't include this option, which may lead to unrealistic initialization of the RUC.
