Saving fewer layers

Hello,
I'm trying to shrink the size of the history files (as each day is close to 250 GB for a 15-km global sim). Is there any way to tell MPAS to save only one or two layers rather than all of them? (Sorry if this was already answered in any other post)

One option is that, in stream_list.atmosphere.output, you can exclude those variables you don't need.

By the way, what do you mean by "only one or two layers"? What does "layer" refer to?
 
I know about excluding variables, but that's not what I want to do. I should probably have specified "vertical layers" rather than simply layers. What I meant is to save only one the layer next to the surface (or just a few) rather than all the 35 (or as many as that simulation has) vertical layers computed by MPAS.
