Using ERA5 for Initial Conditions and GFS for Boundary Conditions in WPS

Dear all,

I would like to use ERA5 data as the initial condition and GFS data as the lateral boundary condition for my WRF simulation.

I understand that this requires combining two meteorological data sources within WPS. However, I am unsure about the correct workflow and namelist configuration, especially regarding:

  • running ungrib separately for ERA5 and GFS,
  • configuring fg_name in metgrid,
  • handling different pressure levels between ERA5 and GFS,
  • and determining whether mod_levs.exe is necessary.
Could you please explain the correct procedure for setting up and running WPS in this case?

Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards,

Is there any special reason you want to use two different datasets for WRF initial and lateral forcing conditions?

While it is technically feasible, We don't recommend doing so because the possible inconsistency between the two datasets may cause issues later during the model integration.
