Using paleoclimate data in MPAS-Atmosphere

Hi everyone,

I am working on the modelling of Upper Pleistocene climate variability and I am considering using MPAS-Atmosphere.

Is it possible in MPAS-A : (1) to use outputs from paleoclimate model simulations as forcings or initial/boundary conditions, and (2) to modify topography/bathymetry as well as ice-sheet extent (e.g. sea level, ice sheets)?

Thank you for your help.

If the outputs of paleoclimate model simulations contain all the variables required for MPAS run, then yes MPAS-A can be used for your paleoclimate study. You may need to modify parameters in radiation and land surface schemes (e.g., solar constant, earth eccentricity, albedo, landuse type, etc.) to make them consistent with the period of your study.

Seaice extent should be included in the outputs of paleoclimate model simulations, and can be processed by init_atmosphere.
