GFS 0.25 archived GRIB2 files

I'm preparing 1–2 years of data for MOS WRF development and need GFS 0.25 historical GRIB2 files.

Is there a known method to achieve server-side spatial subsetting from the AWS GFS archive or any other archive source — equivalent to what NOMADS GRIB filter provides for recent data — without downloading the full ~550 MB GRIB2 file? Or is the accepted workaround simply to download the full file and crop locally when all variables/levels are required for MOS WRF training data?

Hi, Unfortunately the best method is to download the full GFS dataset. We don't recommend trying to crop the data. This will be done by the metgrid program, based on the domain specifications used in geogrid.
