What is the purpose of look-up tables in surface layer parameterization?

Hi all

I am working on the surface layer parameterization schemes in the WRF model. The revised MM5 surface layer scheme uses look-up tables to calculate the values of stability functions for momentum and heat. Is it necessary to use lookup tables? Could we directly call the functions defined at the bottom of the scheme by psim/h_stable_full (zolf) and psim/h_unstable_full (zolf) in the calculation?

The look-up table provides values of important variables over different landuse types. These values will later be used in surface layer scheme. I believe the table definitely is needed.
