What year are the USGS and MODIS land cover in WRF v4 based on?

Dear WRF-experts,

I'd like to know what year was the USGS and MODIS data in the latest WRF version based? Is it 2010 for MODIS and 1992-1993 for USGS?

I cant find information on this in the WRF chapter 3 documentation.


I'll appreciate any help.

Hi Lyndz,

USGS GLCC data are for the period 1992-1993. The coarser resolutions are derived from the 30-arc-second data.

The data in the 'modis_landuse_20class_15s' directory is based on

Broxton, P. D., Zeng, X., Sulla-Menashe, D., & Troch, P. A. (2014). A global land cover climatology using MODIS data. Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology, 53(6), 1593-1605. DOI: 10.1175/JAMC-D-13-0270.1

The data in the 'modis_landuse_20class_30s' directory were provided by NCEP and include the addition of a tundra class; these data were most likely collected in 2001.

The data in the 'modis_landuse_21class_30s' data were modified by Boston University, most likely based on data collected in 2004.

What about this data? This data is listed in https://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/users/download/get_sources_wps_geog.html
as "modis_landuse_20class_30s_with_lakes"
I found the data is based on this product https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/products/mcd12c1v006/ (according to the previous question) But I would like to know the exact year adopted by WRF in the link above.

I am also curious about the year of the MODIS land data in modis_landuse_20class_30s/5m_with_lake from the WRFV4 (https://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/users/download/get_sources_wps_geog.html), are they from the same year as the ones in the WRFV3 version?

The modis_landuse_20class_30s/5m_with_lakes is the same dataset between V3 and V4 model releases. If you are interested in the references, the extent of our knowledge of the datasets can be found here.
