WRF-SAAG Output Variable(s) Clarification

For my current research into WRF-SAAG (NSF NCAR GDEX dataset d616000 - 'Multi-decadal Convection-permitting Simulation of Current Climate over South America using WRF') data access and variables, and I have a question regarding the Deep Soil Moisture (SMCWTD) variable.

I was wondering in this situation, what is Deep Soil defined as, as well as if this is a suitable variable that can be used to determine Available Water Content (AWC) as I am planning on calculating the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) values throughout time for my region of study. I have also found other variables such as Mean Surface Runoff (mrros) and Mean Total Water Content of Soil Layer (mrsol) and would also like clarification on depths/domains defined as "surface" and "soil layer". I have examined the WRF Output for 2-Year NCAR_SAAG Runs excel sheet provided on the UCAR website (South America Affinity Group - Model Output | Research Applications Laboratory), however they do not have the level of detail that I would like to clarify.

I was referred to this forum by the UCAR Service Desk with the hope of getting an answer to this question! My goal is to take the daily values for accumulated precipitation and average 2-meter temperature to make these indice calculations, so any additional clarification on the soil aspect of these variables would be greatly helpful, thanks!
