PX LSM soil nudging

Hello!

I am currently learning how to run an assimilation experiment of indirect soil nudging with the Pleim-Xiu Land Surface Model in WRFv4.4.2. There is very little information available online about soil nudging. I have only found a document related to the PX LSM:https://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/users/docs/PX-ACM.pdf, but after reading it, I am still confused about what observational data to download before performing indirect soil nudging, how to use OBSGRID to preprocess the data, and other related issues. Could you recommend any learning or training materials related to this topic? I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide!

Sincerely,
Pan.

Hi Pan,
I'm not sure what resources you've already tried, but the WRF Users Guide has a section dedicated to the OBSGRID program. Additionally, you may find this presentation useful. I'm not sure any of it specifically mentions soil-nudging, but I would assume that would be done similarly to nudging other variables.
Hello! @kwerner

I'm currently trying to create an SST file for MPAS! And I have posted a thread to inquire about the related issues:Generating SST:* Files

(1) I've seen the series of replies you provided for that post:Merge Vtable.GFS and Vtable.SST, which have been very helpful to me. I have read the "this presentation" you mentioned in your replies. However, since it is a presentation from 2021, I wonder if the three links for downloading SST on page 6 have been updated (the first link seems to no longer provide access to the data)? Or are there any other recommended datasets? Since I can't comment on that very old post anymore, I have to contact you here.

(2) In this post:RE: Enquiry about SST Update in WRF, you mentioned that datasets like GFS also contain SST fields, but their resolution is too low to be recommended for updating sea surface temperature and sea ice. Instead, external SST data sources are suggested. However, the third dataset mentioned in the presentation, NCEP & NCDC Reconstructed SST, also has a resolution of only 1°–2°, and the FNL dataset has a resolution of 1°×1°. So, why is it still recommended to use external SST data?

(3) I'd like to remind you that the "other SST data sets" and "Intermediate files" links on this website (ARW Online Tutorial) also don't work.

Wish you all the best,
